Art of the Cemetery - Presented by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes
Art of the Cemetery
Presented by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes
Thursday - Friday, October 24-25 from 5:30-8:30pmJoin The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes on October 24 or 25, 2024, from 5:30-8:30pm as we explore 3 cemeteries and visit the graves of both well-known and lesser-known women throughout the history of Corning and surrounding areas.
On Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25, Richard Urban and Casey Winston will lead a cemetery tour of three area cemeteries. At each stop, Richard and Casey will tell the stories of these women, as well as discuss aspects of gravestone art and symbology. Women have been underrepresented throughout history and while the popular saying suggests, "Women who behave seldom make history," it's the stories of everyday women and their contributions to their communities and families that we will be discussing on our cemetery tour this year.
We will be walking through uneven ground and partially in the dark as the sun sets so please feel free to bring flashlights and lanterns to help light our way. Dress appropriately for an evening outside in late October traipsing through the grass.
We will meet at the Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes, 73 W. Pulteney St. in Corning at 5:30pm where our bus will depart for the cemeteries. After touring for a couple of hours, we will return to the Heritage Village for a cider and wine tasting provided by Lakewood Vineyards and to enjoy the ambiance of the 1796 Tavern.
Advance registration is required. Seats are limited and the cost is $10 per person.
